Large Naperville Deck Transformed from Hazard to Unique Party Space

The home owner of this 1000 sq ft deck in Naperville hadn't used this deck for almost 10 years. They had a estimate for replacing the entire deck that was almost 10X what we charged her. The deck had over 120 boards that were rotted and needed to be replaced. There were areas on the deck that were not safe to walk. The existing coat of paint was worn out in the high traffic areas.

The pergola posts were severely rooted to the point they could no longer safely support the pergola. Much of the railing needed to be replaced. The home owner wanted to start using the deck again and create an outdoor living space that reflected her own unique style. They were hosting several big events in the upcoming year and wanted to use the deck as an extension of their home.

All of the rotted boards on the deck and railing were removed. The rotted portion of the pergola posts had to be cut off and a new support block was installed. Installing the new boards presented several challenges. In many cases the new boards had to be inserted in between two older boards. The old boards were almost 20 years old and had shrunk so the new boards were wider. Also, adding to the challenge the boards were lying at a 45 degree angle. Every new board had to be cut to the exact 1/16th of an inch to fit properly.

Once the new boards were installed and railing was repaired we made a gate to keep the family dogs off the deck when desired. The entire deck, railing and pergola was then pressure washed and sanded before adding two coats of durable deck paint. The home owner was very pleased the finished deck. They were able to save a lot of money and ended up with a fresh beautiful deck.
